Today I was talking with a friend about Twitter. He was complaining that his Twitter timeline is getting more and more messy, full of pointless tweets and he cannot even notice the tweets of the people he wants to.
I had the same problem. Everyone who's following more than 100 accounts had this problem.
I've solved the problem with two simple steps:
- UNFOLLOW unnecessary people
- USE Tweetbot
The first step is simple and effective: it's stupid follow boring people or people you're not interested in. I'm not following any football player for exemple because I'm not interested at all and I don't want to see his tweets even if he's popular (many people do). Follow only those who deserve it and who can help you to open up your view on the world with new and interesting things.
The second step is even more simple than the first one. Tweetbot is a fantastic app that helps you to manage your Twitter timeline. The app has a wonderful muting system (that syncs with all your devices) and a gorgeous disable-retweets button that you can use with specific and (sometimes) annoying accounts. Tweetbot is a great way to simplify and clean your timeline: just tap an hashtag and select mute, even for a specific period!
To be true there's another way to improve and optimize your Twitter timeline: lists. I've created a list for:
"blogs": to follow specific blogs and sites articles.
"apps": to be updated with news and updates.
"squarespace": to be in touch with the company that provides me the possibility to publish this post (in a cool and simple way!).
Lists contain the tweets of specific accounts that are part of, making it easy to find tweets. It's another nice method to organize the tweets and never lose one.
So, this is how I use Twitter: organizing and using mute-filters are in my opinion great methods, especially when you follow many accounts. However don't forget, the basic rule is always the first step.
