Few days ago I was talking with a friend about one of Samsung's last products: the Galaxy Gear. Well, I'm a fun of wearable technology, in fact I always wear my Jawbone UP and I'm really happy with it. However, I have doubts about this new fashion of smartwatches. Well, I think that wearable gadgets are very useful but, in my opinion, smartwatches are not how they should be at the moment, and many major producers are missing the point. Let me explain.
I'm satisfied with my Jawbone UP because it tells me data and things that my iPhone can't tell. This is simple but extremely important. My iPhone can't tell me exactly how many steps I did in a day, also my iPhone can't tell me how well I slept during the night. Well, the iPhone can do such things but it must run an app in background (while in your pocket) draining the battery, or you should sleep with your iPhone under the pillow (there's really somebody that do that?!). It's not the easiest way. My UP does it with much more simplicity and I don't even notice while I'm wearing it. I use my iPhone to check the emails, to write messages, to check Twitter and so on. So, why do I need a smartwatch to do the same things that my iPhone does?. This is a point.
I've seen a cool video about a great and brilliant product named Nymi . It's basically a wrist band that checks your heart-rate and uses it as a password to unlock various things (car, computer, hotel room…). This is the future in my opinion: a wrist band, a wearable technology, that could improve our lives and simplify actions. This is a point.
I've my iPhone in the pocket, the UP on my wrist and I'm satisfied. I don't need a stupid smartwatch that tells me when there's a Twitter notification (and other useless things): I've my iPhone with me, it does. What should I do with a smartwatch? Use it to see that there's a notification and take my iPhone out of the pocket? I'm still not so stupid (thanks to God!).
Those are the missing points :
- A smartwatch that tells me things that I can't know using my iPhone;
- A smartwatch that helps me and make the things easiest and more enjoyable.
Until those points are not included into a real Smartwatch, I'll continue to consider these present-smartwatches not so smart.
